MONTCLAIR, NJ – Montclair High School (MHS) graduate Justin Murphy competed at the World Rowing (Under 23) Championships in Varese, Italy this summer. A sophomore at the University of California, Murphy is one of eight members of the men’s crew program to row in the prestigious event.

A 2013 MHS graduate, Murphy began rowing while a freshman in high school in 2009. Murphy’s family resides in Montclair and he trains at the Nereid Boat Club in Rutherford when he’s home.

Internationally, Murphy finished ninth in the junior men's pair at the 2013 World Rowing Junior Championships and 12th in the men's junior pair at the 2012 World Rowing Junior Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. He also qualified for the Henley Royal Regatta Silver Goblets in 2011.

Murphy’s national accomplishments include finishing second in the freshman eight at the 2014 IRA Championships. He won the pair at the 2013 Junior World Championship Trials and the men's junior pair at 2013 US Rowing Club National Championships.  Murphy also won the 2013 Stotesbury Cup in the varsity four.

While in high school, he took second place in the four at Stotesbury Cup Regatta in 2011 and won the quadruple sculls at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in 2010.  Also an Eagle Scout, Murphy has been accomplishing many notable achievements for years.  In addition to his varsity and college achievements, Murphy has also won numerous recognitions as a junior varsity athlete.

Murphy has ambitious personal achievement goals and he has expressed that his driving motivation to succeed is intrinsic.  After suffering the loss of his mother, he uses her memory to keep him going.

Murphy started rowing when his mom signed him up for a learn-to-row when he was in ninth grade and he has been rowing ever since.  He attributes his success to the most influential person in his life, his mother, Dawn.  Murphy said, “…she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away a few months later.  Getting named to the National Team is the greatest tribute to her memory and every stroke I take is for her”.
