MONTCLAIR, NJ – South Orange Police have identified an 18-year-old Bloomfield man who died after a pool accident as Talajawon Golden.
After nearly drowning in a friend's South Orange pool Monday afternoon, Golden was resuscitated and taken to a nearby hospital and was in a coma until his death on Tuesday.
South Orange Police officials report that Golden was invited to swim at a friend's house on Redmond Road. Golden's friend found Golden at the bottom of the pool at approximately 3:30 PM. and began yelling for help. A lifeguard who happened to be walking by the area heard the cries for help and responded by pulling Golden from the pool and performing CPR.
Police officers and Rescue Squad members also attempted to resuscitate Golden, police officials said. After Golden regained a pulse, he was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital, but he died the following day.
Golden is a 2013 graduate of Montclair High School, where he played varsity football. He attended Cheyney University.
His family has set up a Gofundme page to help pay for funeral expenses. As of Thursday, $1200 of the $8000 needed had been donated. Many people shared their personal thoughts about Golden on the gofundme site.
Barry Hartsfield donated towards funeral expenses and wrote, "Talajawon was a bright, respectful young man, and I am much better for having known him."
Golden's girlfriend, Shay Harris has announced that Montclair High School has "decided to make a scholarship in his name....in honor of him." Harris says that the scolarship will be for little boys trying to go to college who display the same characteristics as Golden.
Funeral services will be at Cotton Funeral home. Viewing will take place on Tuesday, August 26 from 5 to 9pm and the funeral service will be at the same location on Wednesday, August 27 at 12noon.
