MONTCLAIR, NJ — Five days before the departure of Interim Superintendent Nathan Parker, a new Assistant Superintendent was approved by the Board during the June 25 meeting.

Kalisha Morgan will begin her duties as Assistant Superintendent in Montclair Public Schools on Monday, July 6 at $178,000 a year salary, according to the Board resolution.

Since July of 2018, Morgan has served as the interim principal of Columbia High School in Maplewood and as of publication, had not yet notified her staff of her departure, according to unnamed sources. The Union Township resident, also successfully ran for a seat on the Board of Education in Union Township, in 2018 and is a current Board member of the 9-member Board.

Morgan will join the new Superintendent Johnathan Ponds on his leadership team. Ponds' first day was July 1.

Prior to the move, Morgan had worked in the South Orange-Maplewood School district as the Director of Planning and Assessment since January 2017 and then was transferred, less than a year later, to Columbia High School after a district shuffle of administrators.

Before being hired in South Orange-Maplewood, she had been an elementary and high school principal in Orange for 12 years. Three of those years were under the leadership of Parker, who was Superintendent in the Orange School District from 2003 to 2008. Prior to leaving Orange for a short stint, Morgan had been a teacher and Supervisor of ELA, also in the Orange Public Schools.

In February of 2012, Morgan had been disqualified by the New Jersey Department of Education or DOE from serving as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Visions Charter High School in Newark, after failing to submit fingerprints or background check, under the new state requirements. However, the determination was later reversed since she had a background check already on file in her capacity as principal in Orange, according to Patch.com.

Morgan received her Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University, Two Master's Degrees and a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Kean University.
