MONTVILLE, NJ – The Montville Mustangs girls’ basketball team defeated Sparta, 37-33, on Friday in Montville, bringing the Lady Mustangs' record to 6-4.
The top scorers of the game were sisters Katie and Kelly O’Reilly, who scored 17 and 13 points, respectively, for Montville, and Meghan Boryeskne who led for Sparta with 10 points.
“For two games in a row Tami Lake has done a great job down low,” Mustangs head coach Derek Lynn said. “The team did very well defensively. I’ve been preaching defense during practice and you can see that this is transferring to the court during the game.”
The Lady Spartans took advantage of a slow start by the Mustangs in the first quarter by holding them to only three points after eight minutes of play. The Mustangs found their offense in the second quarter and began driving the ball to the hoop to draw fouls from the Spartans, which led to some late first half bonus free throws that really paid off by the end of the game. The second half of the game was led by Katie O’Reilly of the Mustangs, leading all scorers with 17 points and five rebounds.
The Spartans were able to take advantage of turnovers in the second half by continuing their full-court press and came to within two points within only minutes of play in the fourth quarter after being down, 17-7, at the half. The Lady Mustangs were able to hold off the Spartan press and again draw fouls to maintain their lead and close the game with a victory.
The Lady Mustangs look to build upon their last two wins when they host Kinnelon on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
