SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Jefferson United varsity ice hockey team’s home opener at Skylands Ice World against Montville ended 2-2 on Saturday.  Montville played hard from the first drop of the puck to the last whistle, showing good puck control.

“They came to win,” a Montville coach told his players on the bench.

The Mustangs needed to be on the power play to get the puck past SJU goalie Logan Hanek.  Hanek had 39 saves while Montville goalies Adrian Prelich and Matt Faulkner had a combined 13 saves. Montville outshot SJU 41-15.

Montville’s goals were made in the second and third periods by senior Joe Nuzzi and junior Connor Perez with two assists credited to senior Danny Scheine and one to senior Matt Szwagulinski and Conner Perez. 

With its Monday game against Vernon being postponed due to snowy weather, Montville faces-off against Kinnelon on Friday, Dec. 6 at Skylands Ice World at 4:40 p.m.
