Montville Township Superintendent Proposes Changes to School District's Calendars

March 25, 2014 at 3:30 PM

MONTVILLE, NJ - At the Board of Education meeting on March 18, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Fried proposed changes to the school district's calendars for the next two school years, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.

Fried pointed out that each of the past three school years have had "unusual" weather events impacting the calendar and the alloted four emergency school closing days. As such, Fried presented the BOE with proprosed changes to the previously approved School District's calendars for the next two school year's in an effort to "preserve spring break."

"My hope is to alleviate stress and pressure," Fried said about the proposed changes.

For the 2014-2015 school calendar, it is being proposed to extend the school year three days by moving the last day of school and graduation from Thursday, June 18 to Tuesday, June 23.  This would add three more emergency school closing days for a total of seven for the 2014-2015 school calendar year. Unused emergency school closing days would be "given back" around Memorial Day, 2015.  No additional changes are being proposed to the previously approved 2014-2015 School District calendar.

For the 2015-2016 school calendar, it is being proposed to extend the school year two days by moving the last day of school and graduation from Tuesday, June 21 to Thursday, June 23, as well as having classes on Jan. 18, 2016 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day).  These changes would also add three more emergency school closing days for a total of seven for the 2015-2016 school calendar year.  Similar to the proposal above, unused emergency school closing days would be given back around Memorial Day, 2016.  No additional changes are being proposed to the previously approved 2015-2016 School District calendar.

There were no objections from the BOE regarding the proposed calendar changes and Fried requested that the BOE formally approve the changes at its next meeting.
