CLARK, N.J. – New Providence’s Sydney Morang picked the right time to score a career-high.
Backed by Morang’s 33-point performance, the Pioneers’ girls’ basketball squad advanced to the Union County Tournament semifinal with a 62-36 victory over Plainfield at Arthur Johnson High School on Friday.
The sophomore sharp shooter added 18 rebounds, accounting for her ninth double-double of the season.
New Providence scored only four points in the opening quarter, however the Pioneers poured on 44 points over the next two periods to dominate Plainfield.
The Pioneers’ defense allowed only one double-digit performance from the Cardinals. Drew Winter scored 16 points in the losing effort.
The No. 4 seeded Pioneers will face Roselle Catholic in the county semifinals on Tuesday night. New Providence beat the Lions in upset fashion earlier in the year, 53-51, for Roselle Catholics’ only defeat of the season.
Tip-off and game location have not been determined.
