NEWARK– A mother of a three-year-old boy and five of her roommates have been charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the child was systematically and beaten with a belt and fists. They are also accused of coordinating beatings and pouring scalding water on hin as a form of corporal punishment.
The six defendants share a house in Newark: Patricia Gamarra, 62, Mary Buchan, 55, Patricia Buchan, 28, Bridget Buchan, 23, Natacha Smith, 43, who is the mother of the victim, and Homer Searcy aka Omar Searcy, 39 have been charged
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit in conjunction with the Newark Police Department’s Special Victims Bureau conducted the investigation leading to the arrest.
The accused are currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark and are scheduled to make their first court appearance on Thursday, Dec. 13.
These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they entered a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
