ALLENTOWN, PA - After noticing that the majority of the students in their business classes were men, four Muhlenberg female athletes including Amanda Gorski of Montville decided to band together.

Juniors Nikki Bonvini (lacrosse), Amanda Gorski (basketball), Sarah Karmazyn (softball) and Kristin Oberg (field hockey, softball) recently formed the Muhlenberg Women in Business Club.

"We wanted to create a place where female business majors were able to network and support each other in building our careers," said Oberg. "We hope to build a community where females feel they can make a difference in the business world and not be intimidated working in a male-dominated field."

"We also wanted to provide resources on how to network, use LinkedIn, do well in interviews and more to help as many women succeed as we can," added Gorski.

To that end, the new club plans to host multiple alumni panels each semester and set up a mentoring program with alumni.

The first alumni panel took place in November and featured four recent graduates working in the business field.

In the Zoom chat, the four alumnae talked about their experiences, both at Muhlenberg and in the professional world, offered tips and fielded questions.

"I learned a lot from the Zoom," said Gorski, "including the day-to-day of different types of jobs in business, how the panelists got their jobs, how to incorporate the Career Center in the search for jobs and internships, and lastly how being an athlete helped these women stand out in their job interviews."

All four of the current Mules are business administration majors, with Karmazyn (accounting) and Oberg (finance) adding second majors in closely related fields.

Accounting, business, economics and finance operate as one department (ABEF) at Muhlenberg. The department has a flourishing program of internships, which were emphasized as being important by all four alumni panelists. Nearly 80% of ABEF students participate in an internship during the pursuit of their major, and over 60% of those have more than one internship while at Muhlenberg.

According to its site, ABEF strives "to develop knowledgeable, independent thinkers who are passionate about a life of learning and prepared for rewarding careers in diverse professions. We integrate the very best traditions of the liberal arts with thorough pre-professional studies, nurturing the intellectual agility necessary for success in a dynamic world."

The Women in Business Club wants to help their gender experience that success.

"Women continue to face challenges in certain fields of business and have to break down barriers that men do not to reach their goals," said Oberg. "We hope that our club will continue to help grow the amount of women in business."
