Mustang Crashes into Pet Valu Store on Main Street

MADISON, NJ - A borough man driving a 2008 Ford Mustang crashed into the Pet Valu store at 235 Main St. on Tuesday.

According to Madison police, Michael Garkawe, 78, was driving a blue Mustang that struck the facade of Pet Valu building.  Upon speaking to Garkawe, officers determined that, while pulling into a parking space, Garkawe’s foot slipped off of the brake pedal and hit the accelerator, causing him to strike the building.

Madison Fire Department and the Madison Building Department assisted on scene. There were no injuries reported, and none of the animals inside the store were harmed. The damage to the building was determined to be cosmetic in nature and did not affect the structural integrity of the building, according to Russ Brown, the Madison building/construction official.

Garkawe was issued a motor vehicle summons for careless driving as a result of the accident.
