I have to admit something. I have been on maternity leave for the last 3 months and one of the guilty pleasures that I have succumbed to is watching reality television. In the past, I had negative thoughts about people who watched these shows, and then someone left the E channel on. I now have a love affair with Ice and Coco, the Kardashian’s, and of course, Khloe and Lamar. I thoroughly enjoy watching their escapades and find them to be quite entertaining. I can hardly wait for new episodes to come out!
Since this is not something that I am totally proud to admit, it got me thinking. Why do I like these shows so much? What is causing me to be captivated by these characters?
There are two people specifically that I really like in these shows and I am quite sure they are the reason I continue watch. Let’s start with Coco. She is a blond beauty who isn’t afraid to flaunt her curvy figure. She is totally committed to her marriage and puts it above everything else in her life, including her career. She has good relationships with friends and family. To top it all off, she has a great sense of humor and gets to travel around with her dog and her husband.
Then there is Khloe. Out of all the Kardasian women she is by far my favorite. Similar to Coco, she puts a lot of effort into her marriage, she also has a strong personality and isn’t afraid to call it like she sees it. She seems very bright and business savy without being consumed by fame. She knows what is important in life.
Obviously, I am only speaking about what I see on these shows, as I don’t know either of them personally. Well, that is not completely true…a few years ago my husband (then boyfriend) and I were in the same movie theatre with Ice and Coco. While waiting for us to come out of the ladies room (yep, I peed with Coco) my husband did tell Ice T that he thought “Trespass” was a much better movie than the one we just watched.
But I digress. The intention of this article isn’t about getting you to start spending time watching reality television, but rather to beseech you to take some quiet time to think about the people that intrigue you in your life. Make a list of these people; it doesn’t matter if it is someone in the public eye or from your personal life. Decide what characteristics you like about them and begin to take action to build these qualities in yourself.
