National Wear Red Day Proclaimed at Fanwood Council Meeting

January 29, 2014 at 8:00 AM

FANWOOD, NJ - Feb. 7 will be a day to both raise awareness for women's heart health and a day to spotlight dental care for kids in the borough.

Tuesday night at the Fanwood Council Meeting, Mayor Colleen Mahr proclaimed Feb. 7 as National Wear Red Day. February is the 10th installment of "Go Red For Women," the American Heart Associations national campaign to raise awareness of women’s cardiac health.

“For the very first time, Fanwood will take part in the National Wear Red Day. Heart disease is the Number 1 killer of women in America,” said Mahr, who was wearing a red pin, in the shape of a dress, the symbol of women and heart disease. “On February 7, we are going to light Borough Hall red to bring attention to the fact that heart disease is the Number 1 killer of women, and it is preventable.”

On Friday, Mahr, Councilwoman Kathy Mitchell and others will be joined by Patty Buckridee, captain of the Fanwood Rescue Squad and a heart attack survivor. For more information, see the borough’s website

At last night’s council meeting, the mayor welcomed Councilman Tom Kranz as he began his term as an elected official in the borough. During his report on health initiatives, Kranz mentioned that Feb. 7 is the day for the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile program. For one day only, children 12 and under without dental insurance may receive free dental care. The event will take place at Rutgers Allied Dental Education department in the Union County Vo-Tech complex, 1776 Raritan Road, Scotch Plains. See the website for additional information.

Mitchell reported on the Fanwood Memorial Library, which recently sent out a Request For Information: Architect/Consultant for Library Design. “We got six or seven responses, and they will be submitting additional information,” Mitchell said.

Mahr mentioned the library’s fundraising effort, "Close the Gap." The Fanwood Library is 89 percent of the way to reaching a goal of $10,000. The campaign to raise funds began in December 2013. Proceeds will go toward technology upgrades in the library and the acquisition of new books and other materials. For additional information, and to make a donation, go to
