RANDOLPH, NJ – Scratching your head over the lines at the DMV? Don’t want to face waiting hours to get an inspection or renew your driver’s license? Well, good news.

Governor Murphy further extended expiration again for the following services:

  • driver’s licenses
  • permits
  • non-driver IDs
  • inspections
  • temporary tags

Murphy said the documents above that were set to expire between March 13 and May 31 have been extended to Sept. 30. Documents expiring between June 1 and Aug. 31 are extended to Dec. 31.

Murphy has called back all furloughed employees to get “all hands on deck.” Normal business hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting July 18.

If you need to conduct business with the DMV, start at the motor vehicle website. If you received your paperwork in the mail, go to NJMVC.gov and find the link that applies to the business you need to conduct.

If you do need to go to the DMV, keep in mind that the closest facilities; Wayne, Oakland and Randolph – have been designated as Licensing Centers.

Licensing

Use these three facilities for transactions having to do with your driver’s licenses, with a few exceptions. Keep in mind that the construction at the Wayne facility has made parking very difficult, and lines are very long.

These centers will handle first-time licenses – which will get priority – and permits, and REAL ID if you have an appointment (keep in mind, the necessity for REAL ID on flights has been extended to Oct. 1, 2021). These centers will also handle out-of-state transfers and expired commercial driver’s licenses. They will not handle driver knowledge tests, registrations or title work. They also won’t do renewals, replacements, or changes of address for unexpired licenses because you can do that online.

Vehicle Centers

East Orange, Wallington and Springfield are the closest Vehicle Centers. Go to a Vehicle Center if you need to register or conduct a title transfer of a vehicle for a private sale, get a new registration or title, or conduct a license plate transaction. Don’t go to these centers for renewals or unexpired registrations because you can do that online, and don’t go to these centers for driver’s license transactions because you need to go to Wayne, Oakland or Randolph – the Licensing Centers.

Road Testing

If your appointment is scheduled for June 29 or later, you should show up for your appointment.

If your appointment was canceled during the COVID-19 closure, you should have received a letter with a link to schedule your appointment at one of the 11 Road Test sites that are serving those who were canceled. If you should have received a letter and didn’t, contact MVC.

If you do not yet have an appointment, you can make one at NJMVC.gov. The link is at the top of the page – “Driver Testing.”

Inspection

Wayne, Paramus and Lodi are the closest Inspection Centers. You can also have your vehicle inspected at private inspection facilities, such as service stations, for a fee.

Other Information

You must wear a mask to enter the facilities. The agencies will be giving out tickets according to how many customers they can serve that day, and anyone who doesn’t get a ticket needs to leave. No camping out is allowed – nobody is allowed on the property before 7 a.m. Priority is going to be given to new drivers.
