WEST ORANGE, NJ - On a beautiful Monday morning in West Orange, nearly 7,000 West Orange public school students returned to school, whether by school bus, automobile, or on foot.
The school bus fleet was out in force as they picked up high school, middle school and elementary school students. A few years ago, the district created a 'staggered' system of school times to most efficiently utilize busing and save money for taxpayers. High school students begin classes at 7:30 am and end at 2:15 pm; middle school students begin classes at 8:00 am and end at 2:53 pm; and elementary school students begin classes at 8:45 am and end at 3:23 pm.
Liberty and Roosevelt Middle Schools implemented their new block scheduling today, after spending the summer months putting it into place. West Orange High School debuted its Rotating Drop schedule, which includes a common lunch period. While high school students described their first common lunch period as 'crazy,' most took it in stride and expect that it will take a little time to 'tweak' any problems.
Parents waxed nostalgic and students posed, squirmed, smiled, and grimaced for photos on their first day back. But a picture is worth a thousand words, and the West Orange Alternative Press was privileged to get permission from several parents and students to publish their first day photos. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.
