MAPLEWOOD, NJ — If you have ever wondered what to do with your expired or unused medications, here is the opportunity to dispose of them without them getting into the wrong hands or contaminating the waste stream: April 24 is Drug Take Back Day. Drop off your unwanted or expired medications at the drop box located in the Maplewood Police Department lobby.
Drug Take Back Day is sponsored by the Maplewood Health Department in partnership with ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team) and Family Connections. If you can't make it on April 24, anyone can drop off unwanted or expired medications throughout the year in the drop box located in the lobby of the Maplewood Police Department, 1618 Springfield Ave. You do not need to be a resident to participate.
According to ADAPT, “Research shows that 70% of individuals who abuse prescription and or over-the-counter medication get access to them from the medicine cabinet or household of a friend or family member. Raising awareness about prescription and over-the counter medication abuse and building a safe and healthy community are the key goals of this joining project” (2021).
In light of Earth Day on April 22, please DO NOT dispose of medications down the sink or flush down the toilet because it contaminates the water system and ultimately the food we consume. The medication drop boxes at local police departments are the proper way to dispose of expired or unused medications; please put the medications in plastic bags so that your personal information is not with the medication from the prescription container.
The medication drop-off box inside the Maplewood Police Department is accessible all year around and has successfully collected more than 32 pounds of medications every three to four months.
