MONTCLAIR, NJ, JULY 2014 – The world’s favorite super heroes have found a new home in Montclair with the opening of East Side Mags (7 South Fullerton Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042, 862-333-4961). The shop offers comics both old and new, trade paperbacks, games, and toys. Customers can fine original and local art for sale as well as independently drawn and published comics.
Shop owner and Wayne, New Jersey, Native Jeff Beck has been collecting comics for over 20 years and after two long years of planning, he made the brave decision to leave his hospitality and technology position in NYC to follow his passion.
“It gets more kids to read rather than sitting on social media,” says Beck. “They become active in a community where you have people reading the same books and engaging in conversation.”
The grand opening kicks off on Friday, July 18th and stems through the weekend with live music performances, writer and illustrator signings and more.
· Friday, July 18th: A live music performance from Policemen in Pickups, a rock band from Essex County.
· Saturday, July 19th: Brian Smith signing - writer/illustrator forSpongebob Squarepants, Stuff of Legend, The Intrepid EscapeGoat, Monsuno, Max Steel, Voltron Force and the new, upcoming title from IDW called Tree Mail).
· Sunday, July 20th: Signings by web comic Upside Down Grin and Dylan Klymenco. In addition, the artist will enter anyone buying a print in a raffle to win one free commission and an exclusive, limited-run print will be created for the grand opening by UDG and on sale only for that day at East Side Mags.
Alongside the exciting events, East Side Mags is also offering numerous specials and raffles to customers throughout the weekend such as 10% off select purchases and raffled movie tickets, signed books, and more.
Within the store one can easily spot two large chalkboards – one listing the new comics that are released that week and the second for kids and those young-at-heart to test out their own drawing skills. Beck shares these drawings on East Side Mags social media account before erasing it for new illustrations. “Kids are, by nature, creative individuals, and at East Side Mags we strive to nurture and encourage that with our chalkboard wall,” says Beck
Beck is ecstatic to build up the sense of community behind the comic book world within Montclair. East Side Mags serves as a place to find nostalgia through classic toys and comics, find interest in new issues, new titles, new characters, and make new friends!
