New Jersey Date Night is a series on NJ Flavor by relationship writer Craig Rogers.

A new year is upon us and optimistically one may believe that the possibilities are endless. Granted we just came off a year so horrific that it makes Divorce Court look better than Disneyland, so it’s reasonable to be a little trepidatious. But then again, aiming for the positive is a mindset that should be practiced by couples and singles alike.

2021 is a blank slate ready to be filled with all sorts of great — so much great that you and your love will need a minute to decide where to start. Just like a New Jersey diner menu with tasty treats ranging from breakfast to burgers to blue plate specials, options in the new year are endless and the possibilities are many. Talking about those possibilities on a date in a diner is the perfect start to New Year success.

Get ready for a New Jersey Date Night where the menu is heavy and the waffles are light!

Soup’s On!

Edison Family Restaurant has been a mainstay in Edison since 1978. You can’t go wrong with their breakfast offerings. Or try daily specials like Yankee pot roast with a potato latke and vegetables or roasted half chicken with potatoes and veggies.

If you want to make a salad your main meal, check out their Palm Beach Taste, with fresh avocado, lobster salad, tomatoes, shrimp salad and hard-boiled egg.

Edison Family Restaurant is known for their soups and it’s super easy to take a quart or two home with you. With choices like lima bean and mushroom barley, how can you not?

Breakfast and More

Choices abound when your date night is at the Broad Street Diner in Keyport, where breakfast is served all day. Or try a classic diner sandwiches, like a triple decker club or open-faced Ruben. Come hungry!

Main course dinners are impressive, including blackened Cajun shrimp and pasta with andouille sausage and balsamic pork chops with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach topped with melted mozzarella. Save room for the pudding.

Cocktails Too?

Suburban Diner in Paramus has been serving up delicious food since 1990 and also has a full service bar. Their martini menu is impressive, including the Paramus-tini (Sobieski orange and raspberry vodka, Malibu rum, cranberry and lime juices) and the Flirtini (Sobieski raspberry vodka, triple sec, pineapple and cranberry juices).

Appetizers include Hawaiian BBQ flatbread (chicken or turkey with pineapple, red onion, mozzarella, cilantro and barbecue sauce) and avocado egg rolls (avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, red onion and cilantro with a cashew dipping sauce).

Main courses include moussaka and chicken Milanese. End your evening with a dessert coffee, such as the Jamaican, with Tia Maria, creme de cacao and whipped cream as you make plans for 2021.

Classy Classic

When the iconic sign tells you to “Eat Heavy,” you know your date night is at Tick Tock Diner. Located in Clifton, this Jersey classic has been hosting everything from date nights to bar mitzvahs since 1948. Their sandwiches and main courses are cooked to perfection, including the 50/50 Burger (made with half ground bacon and half ground chuck) and the Tick Tock chicken sandwich.

Their breakfast options are fantastic, like the Nutella banana French toast and the classic Denver omelet. For the perfect old school Jersey experience, be sure to order a milkshake with those fries, like their cookies and cream frosty shake.

All That and a Side of Disco Fries

It might be a challenge, but opening your hearts and heads to a multitude of great is the best way to start a new year.  When couples choose positivity over pessimism and optimism over fear, the possibilities are endless. Just because we’re coming out of a year of unparalleled strange doesn’t mean that trend needs to continue. If our 2021 intentions are positive we create an environment that attracts just that — sometimes to a point where you’ll be surprised by its abundance.

Affirmative thinking, positive actions and enthusiastic hope are on today’s specials menu … and it’s OK to order two plus one to go.
