JERSEY CITY, NJ — A family in Jersey City is desperately searching for a donor to help save the life of a young boy with severe kidney disease.

"My seven-year-old son, Modak, is in need of a kidney donor," said Nirmesh Kumar. "His kidneys are functioning at 6.5 percent."

Modak, a Golden Door Charter School second grader, was initially diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome in 2018. However, within the past few weeks, his condition has deteriorated to Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5 (end-stage renal disease), which may soon entail dialysis three-or-more times per week for three-to-four hours each, his family explained.

"This is too much for a kid to go through," said Kumar. "He should be spending time with his friends and family, enjoying life and his toys."

Modak is currently on the NYU Langone Active Recipient list. With the typical wait time for a kidney being about three-to-five years, the family is asking for potential donors to step forward.

"We are asking if you can save my son’s life and be his kidney donor," said Kumar. "If you can find it in your heart to be Modak’s angel, please REGISTER HERE to be tested (reference: Modak Vats)."

Anyone who can spread the word is also encouraged to do so.

"We have started a GoFundMe as well, but its main intention to find a donor," said Kumar, who just wants to see Modak get his life back. "He is an active kid, he likes hiking, martial arts and wants to skydive."
