New Jersey Swimmers Give Back to Community

August 13, 2013 at 4:13 PM

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Swimmers in New Jersey are proving that winter isn’t the only season for giving. The swimmers of New Providence and its surrounding towns have been doing good for their community and those around it.

On July 12, the swimmers of the New Providence swim team put on their caps and goggles and braced themselves for a highly anticipated event: the swim-a-thon. Participants swam as many laps as they chose in the hour of practice, or, if they wanted, attending multiple practices and swimming for many hours.

Everyone had a great time getting to set goals on how many laps they could do and getting to achieve them. However, this event was more than just a good time. Prior to the swim-a-thon, the kids collected sponsors to pay them by the lap. The money that was received from the sponsers then went to the Community Service Association of New Providence, which helps out people in the community. Overall, the swim team raised over $1,000. Good job to all participants and sponsors for swimming for a cause.

In addition, the New Providence swim team along with other North Jersey towns participated in Swim For Food by collecting non-perishable foods for those in need. The Green and Gold team collected 931 pounds of food, the entire North Jersey Summer Swim league collected 6,900 pounds of food, and the Town and Country league collected 2,600 pounds of food. However, that’s only half of it. For every four dollars that were donated, FoodBank is able to fill a backpack of food to give to a hungry child during the school year. New Providence raised enough for 55 backpacks, North Jersey Summer Swim League for 119 backpacks and Town and Country League 168 backpacks. The total amounts of food and backpacks accumulated impressively: 12,015 pounds of food and 490 backpacks. These donations allow for many mouths to be fed.

All good things must come to an end, and as August begins, summer swim team ends. Congratulations for all swimmers who swam at championships as well all other swimmers for making it a great summer swim season and, hopefully, many more to come.

Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

We typically don’t thank our body parts because they seldom leave us.  Most of us have not experienced unfortunate accidents or suffered the horrible consequences of war; tragic events  which might cause us to lose a limb.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...
