ROXBURY, NJ - The developers of the new Shops at Ledgewood Commons are giving the township an easement along Righter Road that will become part of a paved path connecting Horseshoe Lake Park with Ledgewood Park.

The easement is one of many things the Roxbury Township Planning Board required in approving the new shopping center. It is something the builders are glad to give because the proposed Righter Road Greenway Trail will help people access the new stores without driving, noted Bob Canace, a trail consultant working for the township.

“They understand this will be beneficial to them,” Canace said. “They’ve been very generous and cooperative.”

More difficult will be building a section of the trail that will traverse the wetlands on the south side of Righter Road across from Roxbury Mall The township bought the property for $25,000 and trail planners are now figuring out how to build the path through it, possibly using a boardwalk, Canace said.

“We brought in a consultant to take a peek, and we’re also talking to an expert the county just hired who has a lot of experience,” he said. “We’re not yet clear where we are going to go through this property. That’s still being studied. Once we understand what we’re going to put in place, we will put in a grant proposal for a state Transportation Planning Authority grant.”

Canace said the new trail will not use any existing sidewalks because it is meant to be used by both walkers and cyclists. It will connect the West Morris Greenway trail adjacent to Horseshoe Lake in Succasunna with Ledgewood Park and Morris Canal Park in Ledgewood.

The trail proposal was presented to the Roxbury Mayor and Council in 2017 and there is no estimated completion date. “It’s moving along a little faster than glacial speed,” Canace joked. “It’s a long-term project. You’ve gotta first point in the right direction, and we now have an idea how it can be done.”
