NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Pioneer swimmer Lucia Donnelly had one of the most successful swimming seasons in school history.
The junior pool-dweller broke several school records, leading the Pioneers to several overall wins in the process.
For her success in the pool this season, girls’ junior swimmer Lucia Donnelly has been named The Alternative Press of New Providence’s Athlete of the Week.
Donnelly’s strong season culminated in one of the greatest accomplishments for a high school swimmer. She will be competing at the Meet of Champions from March 1 to March 2 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology.
“I’m really excited,” said Donnelly, “I’ll probably be seeded pretty well and I’ll be going up against top girl swimmers in the state and county. I’m hoping to lower my previous records and break a couple more.”
Lucia was New Providence’s top point scorer in dual meets. At the Union County Championships, she set new record for her team by winning the 100-meter backstroke race. She also placed 3rd in the 100-meter freestyle race.
New Providence swim coach Walter Kempner had nothing but positives to say about his swimmer’s season.
“She’s a great kid,” Kempner said. “She has been continually improving and is starting to record times that are at a new level for her as well as for our team. She is becoming one of the more recognized swimmers countywide and statewide. She is a great team player that is ready to swim at any of our meets and is willing to swim anything that helps us secure points and victories.”
In early March, be sure to look for Lucia at the Meet of Champions as she looks to compete for an individual state championship.
