New Providence Boys Basketball Bounces Back with Romp Over Johnson

December 21, 2013 at 5:37 PM

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - After a tough loss on Friday to rival Summit, the New Providence boys basketball team showed no ill-effects, dominating Arthur L. Johnson High School, 63-37, on Saturday at NPHS.

Senior guard Curtis Kyzima paved the way offensively, tallying a team-high 14 points, including three 3-pointers.  Junior center Matt Romeo chipped in 13 points, tying his career high, which was achieved one day prior.

“I think from a team mindset, we were able to transition very quickly because we knew we would have an opportunity to win today,” Romeo said.  “We didn’t want to have a carry over effect from last night.”

The Pioneers wasted no time to get off to an auspicious start, going on an 8-2 run to begin the game and taking a 19-6 lead after one quarter.

“I decided to put pressure on them early on in the game with our full court press,” New Providence head coach Art Cattano said.  “I didn’t want us sitting around so I thought full court pressure would be key.”

The dominance by the Pioneers in the first quarter carried over into the second, starting out on a 15-5 run and finishing strong, giving New Providence a comfortable 38-14 lead at the half.

“We were able to get off to a strong start defensively because we knew we had a good game plan and we knew we could press them,” Romeo said.  “And offensively, we came out extremely hot.”

New Providence didn’t look back in the second half, never letting the Crusaders get within 20 points.

“We performed much better than yesterday,” Cattano said.  “We took care of the ball and we knocked down shots when we needed to.”

Senior forward Bryan Sherman accounted for 10 points in the winning effort, and junior Tyler Curto put in eight.

The Pioneers are back in action on December 27 against Chatham at 8 p.m. in the annual Cougar Classic.
