CHATHAM, NJ - The New Providence Pioneers picked up their second victory of the boys basketball season in the second game of the Cougar Classic on Saturday, a 46-41 defeat of Madison at Chatham High School.
Things didn’t get off to a hot start for the Pioneers, trailing 8-2 early on in the opening quarter. However, nine straight points for New Providence gave them the lead.
Winless Madison led, 12-11, after one quarter and 23-17 at halftime, but that would not last long.
Buckets by Bryan Sherman and Jordan Morang gave the Pioneers a lead in the third they would not relenquish.
The Pioneers took a 32-29 lead after three quarters of action, and continued to stay hot into the fourth.
The lead extended to as much as eight with 35 seconds to go, but a pair of threes by Madison cut the Pioneer lead to two.
However, the Dodgers were not able to capitalize on a chance to tie the game and forward Jordan Morang and center Matt Romeo knocked down game-clinching free throws, enabling New Providence to secure the victory.
Bryan Sherman led all New Providence scorers with 13 points, while Morang chipped in with 11.
Matt Romeo and Curtis Kyzima had eight and seven points.
New Providence returns to action on Monday in the finale of the Couger Classic when the Pioneers take on Millburn at 4 p.m.
