NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The Pioneers varsity football team honored the accomplishments of this year’s senior class, and also came away with a 48-7 victory over Manville on Saturday afternoon at Lieder Field.
The starting lineup for the Pioneers included all seniors, including notable players on the team such as Brian Urness, CJ Kliesch, and David Gelormini.
“It was emotional,” Urness said. “To put points on the board is just another day on the job for us, and we hope it won’t be our last touchdowns of the year.”
With 2:16 into the first quarter, Kliesch and Gelormini opened up the scoring for the Pioneers, giving them a 7-0 lead. Later on in the quarter, Urness and Gelormini continued the scoring for the Pioneers, giving them a 14-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Pioneers piled on four touchdowns. Kleisch and Urness continued the streak, while Steve Anderson and Joe Ciarocca scored for the Pioneers later on in the quarter as well, going into halftime ahead, 41-0.
Manville broke the shutout late in the third, but Pioneer sophomore quarterback Sean Cole added a fourth-quarter touchdown to put the game away.
New Providence head coach Joe Carollo thought his team played well. His main goal is to have his team keep doing what they’re doing as they have their eyes on the prize – to play at MetLife Stadium.
“It was great,” Kliesch said. “I was happier for Brian because he played his heart out after coming back from injuring his knee.”
After a week off, the Pioneers will visit rival Roselle Park on Nov. 8 to close out their season.
