New Providence Holds Second Annual Day of Service

May 17, 2014 at 6:42 PM

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - American Legion Post 433 was the host location for the Second Annual New Providence Day of Service on Saturday.  The event was geared towards kids and families, and offered a simple way for residents to contribute to local organizations by completing fun tasks.

On the Lincoln Field basketball court, kids participated in the Hoops for Troops event. Volunteers awarded inflatable beach balls, necklaces and sunglasses for those who made free throws. Volunteers also sold iced tea, cookies, cupcakes, and more.

In the Legion’s lot, kids made cards to be sent to US Troops through Bonds of Courage, a non-profit organization committed to enhancing the troops’ morale and to helping veterans and their families. Volunteers sold lemonade and chips and collected donations. The New Providence Lions Club ran the Hot Dogs for Heroes booth in the Legion’s lot. The Prestige Diner donated the hot dogs.

Children also took part in the Good Deed Scavenger Hunt. They received a checklist of good deeds, which included cleaning, recycling, donating, and many other good deeds. A completed checklist could be turned in at the Legion Post for a prize provided by Subway and Zita’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Smashburger donated $1 to the American Legion for each entree/kids meal ordered on Wednesday, May 14.

Event sponsors were key to making this day possible with their monetary contributions and donations of supplies, including Prestige Diner, Dr. Bob Robinson DDS, Argent Plumbing, Starbucks, Zita’s Ice Cream, Subway Sandwiches, Skin Deep Day Spa, NP Fuel, Smashburger, and Clear Point Designs.
Volunteer Groups included The Lions Club, Girl Scouts, and the Relay For Life-7th Grade team.

“It’s a great way for the kids to get out, do something good, and be rewarded for it,” said Allison Smith, who organized the event along with Lisa Barfield. Barfield added, “It builds community spirit and gets the kids involved in helping out.”

All proceeds benefit the American Legion and Bonds of Courage, both of whom are groups that support our U.S. Troops and Veterans.

Smith concluded, “The businesses and residents really support New Providence, and this year they have shown their appreciation to the American Legion and Bonds of Courage.”

Tears Are Good, They Let The Sadness Out

January 16, 2017

Jackie Kennedy and Coretta Scott King were our nation’s role models for mourning in the 1960’s and in the decades since. They were praised for their strength and stoicism, their courage and grace, and rightly so. They were great role models for our nation at a time of great unrest and anxiety, but I would say they were not the role models we needed when it came to grieving our ...

Man vs. Waze

A lot of strange cars are traveling through my quiet neighborhood these days.  They are not driven by my neighbors.  Some mornings I even have trouble getting out of my driveway.
