New Providence Memorial Library Announces Summer Reading Programs

New Providence Memorial Library’s annual Summer Reading Programs will kick off in June this year.  The Adult Program “Literary Elements” starts first on June 1 and runs through the months of June and July.  There are three theme-related events in June and a Science Fiction movie fest in July.

Discussion questions will be posted on the library’s GoodReads and Facebook pages for online participants.  Discussion question forms will also be available in the library for those who don’t want to participate online.  Responses to weekly questions will be eligible for weekly prize drawings.  Prizes have been donated by New Providence businesses and include gift certificates to New Providence Florist, A&P, Tables for Two, McGrath’s, Paolo’s Kitchen and Coppola’s.  A drawing for grand prizes will take place on July 31 at the end-of-program party.  They include gift certificates to NP Fuel, Skin Deep Spa and a basket from Starbuck’s.  No registration is required.  Just respond to the question with what you’re currently reading and you’re entered into the week’s drawing.

Theme-related events start on June 3 @ 7PM with Leonard deGraaf who will be talking about and signing copies of his book “Edison and the Rise of Innovation,” an intimate look at the fabled inventor with never-before-published primary sources.  Mr. DeGraaf is archivist for the Thomas Edison National Historical Park.

June 7 @ 11AM brings Fun with Physics, a fascinating and lively trip through Physics with the Rutgers Graduate Physics Department.  The crew will demonstrate Newton’s Laws using pendulums, beds of nails, garbage cans and even cryogenics.  This program is suitable for ages 8 and up and will be held in Boro Hall.

Next up is Women in Science on June 12 @ 7:30PM and features Rochelle Christopher, an historian and interpreter who will bring to life 25 women, some with NJ connections, who changed the face of modern science.

Check the library events calendar or Facebook and GoodReads for details on the Science Fiction movie fest during the month of July.

Kids can participate in “Fizz, Boom, Read” which will feature reading logs, prizes and fun events.  The program formally kicks off on June 23 with a show by Eyes of the Wild featuring live mammals.

The Teen program “Spark a Reaction” will start on June 30 and run until August 1 with weekly prize drawings and a grand prize supplied by Starbucks.

They were praised for their strength and stoicism, their courage and grace, and rightly so. They were great role models for our nation at a time of great unrest and anxiety, but I would say they were not the role models we needed when it came to grieving our ...

It’s Go Time.

This one goes out to all the juniors out there.

I can feel you squirming in your seats, “Who me?” Yes, you!  The time has come to turn that college dial up a notch.  “But I still have so much time left!”  But you really don’t.  Ideally in a year from now you’ll be sifting through acceptance letters and weighing college options ...

Step Right Up
