New Providence Winter Track Teams Experience Big Success

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The New Providence High School boys’ winter track pole vault team won the Group 1 championship title last weekend during the group relays at the Bennett Center in Toms River

New Providence’s team, led by first year pole vault coach Brian Cooper, scored 22-0 at the tournament and were placed eighth overall. The Pioneers went past Haddonfield, Hasbrouck Heights, Whippany Park, and Weequahic.

“I was very impressed”, said Coach Cooper, “We went to the meet with very little practice and showed composure and aggression at the same time. It brought about very positive results.”

The duo that gave the Pioneers the Group 1 title consists of sophomore Josh Ornovitz and junior Sebastian Camacho.

“It was a good meet”, said Camacho, “We did what our coach said and thankfully we came out with the title. It’s hard in the winter because we don’t get to practice that often.”

This past Saturday morning, both of New Providence’s winter track teams competed in the Union County Championships. The boys’ team took home 10th place, while the girls finished sixth.

Jillian Turner took home first place in the girls’ high jump, while the boys 3,200-meter run team finished second behind Summit.

Both teams will take part in the Metropolitan Invitational on Wednesday before gearing up for the NJSIAA Sectional Championships on Saturday at the Bennett Center.
