New Providence Wrestlers Take 4th in District 12; Send Five to Regionals


SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. - The New Providence varsity wrestling team will be well represented at this week's Region 3 Championship.

Despte falling to South Plainfield, who won their 30th consecutive District 12 title, the Pioneers will send five wrestlers to the regional tournament at Union High School.

The New Providence mat-rats finished with 100 total points, falling just short of 3rd place Gov. Livingston (113.5).

126 pound Tyler Gazaway led the way for the Pioneers, beating South Plainfield's Daniel Hedden by a 7-6 decision to take win his weight class's district crown.

Joining Gazaway in the Region 3 championship will be: Carmine Boccellari - 2nd in the 120 pound class; Daniel Kourakos - 2nd in the 152 pound group; Joe Joe Cirrocca - 3rd in the 195 pound bracket; and Stephen Bremer - 3rd in the 295 pound class.

The top three wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes will advance to the NJSIAA Individual State Championship Match at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall from March 7-9.
