SPARTA, NJ-School start times will change for next year in Sparta. The new times were approved at the board of education meeting on Tuesday, May 27.
The high school will start and end a few minutes earlier than this year. They will begin at 7:03 a.m. and finish at 2:13 p.m. There will be a big change for the middle school. That school will start at 7:35 a.m. and dismiss at 2:30 p.m.
Mohawk Avenue School, which will be the third grade school for the 2014-15 school year, will begin at 8:25 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Helen Morgan will continue to have the fourth and fifth grade students. They will start at 8:50 and end at 3:25. Alpine School, the new educational home of the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten program along with first and second grade, will start at 9:10 and end at 3:45.
Superintendent DennisTobin explained to a parent who was not happy with the changes, the idea was to have high school and middle school times more closely align because of the shared staff between those schools. World Language teachers, supervisors and others must travel back and forth to cover classes in both buildings. Those students also participate in afterschool athletics and co-curricular activities, some work and others have younger siblings to care for until parents return from work. Tobin also indicated that the desire was to have Mohawk Avenue begin earlier but that was cost prohibitive given the tiered structure of transportation in Sparta.
The June meeting dates have been changed. The work session has been rescheduled for June 23 and the regular meeting moved to June 30. Both meetings are open to the public, beginning at 7:30 at Mohawk Avenue School.
