On 2/8/13 at 2:21a.m., Newton Police Officers responded to 17 Madison Street for a report of a 9-1-1 call reporting a disorderly person. Upon arrival, officers heard a firearm being discharged within the residence and as they established contact with the occupants of the residence, it was learned that a male resident had suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder region.
Believing that the actor(s) was still inside, officers secured the scene, evacuated neighboring homes and the residence was searched with negative results by the New Jersey State Police TEAMS unit. Subsequently, the victim was transported to Morristown Medical Center for treatment due to his injury. A woman and two children who were also present inside the residence at the time of the incident were unharmed. A firearm that was believed to be used in the shooting was recovered by police at the scene.
At this time, the investigation remains active and the search for the suspect continues. Suspect was described by the victim as being a tall black male with a beard and was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans.
Newton Police were assisted at the scene by members of the New Jersey State Police, Sussex County Sheriff’s Department, Andover Twp. Police Department and the Sparta Police Department.
Investigation is being conducted by members of the Newton Police Department, the New Jersey State Police and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.
