NEWTON, NJ-- The Newton High School’s Pass-It-Along club held their annual First Responders dinner in the school cafeteria.
Newton Superintendent Ken Greene said, “This has been a feature of Newton’s volunteering efforts for a long time, this isn’t anything new, you’ve always incorporated those of all ages into the work and I think that speaks volumes about your commitment to the community and wanting to see it continue, just like we do with schools. We want to make sure that our youth are ready to serve and there are students here tonight who are ready to serve you.”Those in attendance that volunteered through the club were Kelly Ellsworth, Bridget Fajvan, Morgyn Witt, Kelly Perez, Katelyn McDade, Rebecca McNulty, and Kyla Aviles.
Greene and Business administrator Fred Savio were in attendance, along with Newton High School Principal Jeff Waldron and his wife, gym teacher at Merriam Avenue School Meg Waldron.
Greene welcomed everyone and said a few words to the group before dinner was served. He thanked everyone for coming as well as the student volunteers who put the dinner together.
“I’ve come to have an even deeper appreciation for your work," Greene said. "Unfortunately as you know we’ve dealt with a few student related tragedies here over the last few years and knowing that we have dedicated volunteers who are there at a moment’s notice. It might not have been a fire, or anything specific, but I can tell you it is a great comfort to our staff and to our families.”
Greene introduced Savio who commented “how great it is to see so many young people getting involved.”
The Pass-It-Along club works on setting up, serving and clean up, while Cynthia Gilmore's cooking classes makes the food. Centerpieces on the tables were made by Jenny Allen’s floral class.
Witt, the president of the club this year, thanked all those in attendance for coming and for everything that the first responders do and told them to enjoy the food prepared.
It was an Italian menu this year; sausage and peppers, Chicken franchise, lasagna rolls, Caesar salad, bread and tiramisu and carrot cake for dessert.
Savio said it was "great it is to see so many young people getting involved.”
