NEWTON, NJ - The ongoing investigation by Detectives from the Newton Police Department and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office has revealed the identity of the person who shot a resident of 17 Madison Street on Friday 2/8/2013 at 2:21 AM. As a result of the identification, police have obtained warrants for the arrest of Karl R. Friday, an unemployed male who was last known to reside in the area of Denville, NJ.

Friday is described as a black male, age 38, 6’-01”, weighing 201-220 pounds, with a beard. A photo of Friday is attached. Karl Friday is also known to use the nickname “Cutty”.
Warrants were authorized by Hon. Judge N. Peter Conforti, JSC, charging Friday with the following crimes:
· Attempted Murder NJS 2C:5-1A(1) of 2C:11-3, a First Degree Crime
· Burglary NJS 2C:18-2a(1), a Second Degree Crime
· Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose NJS 2C:39-4A(1), a Second Degree Crime
· Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (Assault Firearm) NJS 2C:39-5F, a Second Degree Crime
· Aggravated Assault NJS 2C:12-1B(1), a Second Degree Crime
The police investigation revealed that the suspect, Karl Friday, broke into the victim’s residence through a ground floor window. While this was happening, the occupants of the apartment barricaded themselves in an upstairs room. Friday then shot through the door of the room with a MAK 90 Sporter 7.62 x 39 caliber rifle striking the 26 year old male victim in the shoulder. The victim is currently receiving care at the Morristown Medical Center and is considered stable. The investigation has shown that there is a connection between the parties involved. Police are continuing to investigate this and all other aspects of the case.
During the investigation, Police also developed information leading to the arrest of Leann Dawes, a 37 year old resident of Denville, NJ. Dawes was charged with Hindering Apprehension NJS 2C:29-3A(2) a Third Degree Crime. Dawes hindered the apprehension of Friday by transporting him away from the area of the crime scene and by providing false information to the police. Complaints were prepared and warrants were authorized for her arrest by Hon. Judge John E. Mulhern JMC. Dawes was located and arrested by the Denville Police Department on Sunday February 10, 2013 at approximately 4:30 AM. She was brought back to the Newton Police Department where she was processed and then released after posting bail which was set at $7500 no 10%.
