Nikhil Badlani Foundation Artwork Displayed on NJ Transit Buses and In Stations

May 11, 2014 at 1:09 PM

WEST ORANGE, NJ - May is National Youth Traffic Safety month, and New Jersey Transit has recognized the efforts of the Nikhil Badlani Foundation to promote awareness of distracted driving by displaying artwork created by the students of West Orange, Nutley, and Bloomfield High School on NJ Transit buses and stations.

For the past several years, the Nikhil Badlani Foundation, spearheaded by Sangeeta and Sunil Badlani along with friends and family, has worked to educate the community and particularly, students, about the dangers of distracted driving. The Badlanis' son, Nikhil, was killed in an auto accident on June 11, 2011, when a distracted driver failed to stop at a stop sign on Wyoming Avenue in South Orange.

The foundation has provided workshops for students in Driver's Education classes at West Orange High School; unveiled a distracted driving mural on permanent display at the West Orange Public Library; helped to provide a driving simulator at WOHS; worked with Nutley High School on a public service announcement; and launched distracted driving awareness efforts at both Nutley and Bloomfield High.

The foundation has raised tens of thousands of dollars to promote traffic safety awareness and also supports music programs in West Orange by providing scholarships and special music training. Nikhil was an accomplished musician.

The artwork can be seen on NJ Transit buses throughout Essex County and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, and is also on display in the following stations:

Bay Street, Montclair
Lyndhurst
Montclair State University, Montclair
Mountain Station, South Orange
Newark Broad Street
