NJ Greek Fest in Westfield Will Give Back to Community

May 25, 2014 at 8:37 PM

WESTFIELD, NJ — Enjoy a taste of Greece at the 5th Annual NJ Greek Fest from May 29 through June 1 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 250 Gallows Road in Westfield, and your admission donation will go to Children's Specialized Hospital, the Orthodox Christian Fellowship and the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Highlights of the festival include Greek food, Greek dancing, live music, cooking demonstrations, games and activities designed for kids ages three and older.

"NJ Greek Fest is not just an excuse to experience a little bit of Greece in Westfield, it’s one of Holy Trinity’s outreach programs,” explained Agapios Kyritsis, chairman of the 2014 NJ Greek Fest. “This year we are splitting 100 percent of the admissions proceeds three ways between the Westfield Rescue Squad (a totally volunteer organization that doesn't charge for their services), the Orthodox Christian Fellowship (a pan-Orthodox campus fellowship program) and Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside."

“There will be amusements for the kids and some of the best Greek ‘fast food’ and dinners,” added NJ Greek Fest Co-Chairman Mike Savva. “With the smell of gyros (pronounced yee-rows) and souvlakia (skewered and grilled pork or chicken) being cooked outside, you won't be able to resist. This year we have two new menu items for those who don't eat meat — an octopus appetizer and Greek-style ‘fish and chips.’”

Attendees can also look forward to such specialties as spanakopita (spinach pie) hot out of the oven, Greek Feta cheese, lamb shanks and treats including loukoumathes (Greek donuts with honey) and baklava.

In addition, “Church parishioners went to Greece this spring to bring back to Westfield original hand-crafted jewelry,” said NJ Greek Fest Co-Chairman Mike Savorgiannakis.

NJ Greek Fest’s Master of Ceremonies Ted Vagelos said they anticipate over 10,000 people will come out to enjoy NJ Greek Fest this year. He added that this year they have weather-proofed the festival with tents and air conditioning in the Bouras Center, and parking is always free both at the church and at Union County College, located across the street with a free shuttle bus.

On Friday, NJ Greek Fest will welcome back Fox 5 New York's Nick Gregory, who is scheduled to broadcast the weather live from NJ Greek Fest on that afternoon.

Admission donations are $2 per person and children under 12 are free. Hours are Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m.,  Saturday from noon until 11 p.m. and Sunday at noon and until 7 p.m.
