The North Salem Youth Baseball league has stepped up to host Bowl-A-Rama for K-5 boys after the district decided it could no longer be a PTO-sponsored event.

The event will be nearly identical to that of year’s past, said Sheila Denneen, who ran it when it was a PTO event and now is running it as a NSY Baseball event.

“It’s always been a special event for me to attend with my boys,” Denneen said. “It’s a tradition.”

Denneen said she has photos lined up in her kitchen from all the years she went with her sons.

NSY Baseball is also helping to support this Snowflake Ball, which was canceled along with Bowl-A-Rama as a PTO event by the district.

Marcy Miller, co-president of the PTO, took on the planning Snowflake Ball—taking place from is from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Salem Golf Club—as a private citizen.

The events are not able to be run by the PTO, according to PQ administration, because of state laws against gender discrimination.

The PTO is currently brainstorming a different family spring event for the whole elementary school community.

This year’s NSY Baseball Bowl-A-Rama will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Spin Bowl in Carmel. All North Salem boys in grades K-5 are invited to participate for an afternoon of bowling, photo keepsakes and memories with a special guest such as a mom, grandma, aunt, or big sister at least 16 years old.

The fee is $35 for one child and the special guest, which includes two hours of open bowling and a souvenir for the child. The cost is $15 for each additional child.

In previous years, the PTO held two bowling sessions, but Denneen said there will only be one session this year and so families are encouraged to sign up early.

To register, visit and create an account on SI Play if you don’t already have one. When you’re logged in, click on “register to play/participate” under “2019 Bowl-A-Rama.” Select the name of the child you want to register and follow the prompts. If you have additional children to register, add them when you get to the shopping cart by hitting “add additional players.”

All payments must be made with a credit card, no checks will be accepted.

Registration must be completed by Tuesday, Feb. 19. No walk-ups will be accepted. For more information, email

At Bowl-A-Rama, families will also be encouraged to sign up for spring baseball, a bonus of the event being hosted by NSY Baseball.

“It’s a great community-based event and something people really feel passionate about and want to see continued,” Denneen said of Bowl-A-Rama. “It gets kids out of the house on a weekend winter day and gets them to be active.”
