SUMMIT, NJ - Girls Varsity Basketball player Cassidy O'Malley and Boys Wrestling team member Tanner Thomas have been named Summit High School Athletes of the Week, presented by The Alternative Press of Summit, for the week ending January 12.
Each week throughout the school year, one girl and boy athlete will be honored for distinguishing herself / himself in the arena of competition, in the classroom, and for demonstrating exemplary, Hilltopper-caliber sportsmanship and leadership qualities.
In three games, sophmore O'Malley scored a total of 59 points and grabbed 27 rebounds. In the two Hilltopper victories the team had over Plainfield and Linden, O'Malley scored 25 and 28 points. O'Malley's 28-point effort made her only "the seventh Summit High School girls basketball player to ever score 28 points or more in a single game," according to Head Coach Brian Erickson.
Thomas, with a 9-2 record on the season, went 3-0 at the Paul Finn duals picking up bonus points in all three matches. He has stepped up during his senior year, winning big matches against tough opponents and picking up much-needed bonus points for the team. Thomas scored two pins at the Paul Finn Duals, and scored a major decision on top of that, with the extra points enough to edge out a win over Millburn 40-39. “The urgency to score extra points for the team is rare, and Tanner does the best he can to ensure the bonus is awarded,” said Head Coach Anthony Ferrante.
