PATERSON, NJ -  Three two and a half story homes were destroyed and a fourth was damaged as flames extended along the closely spaced structures on Summer Street Tuesday.

Paterson firefighters responded to the scene on the report of a fire at 480 Summer Street at approximately 1:30 a.m., and, upon arrival, found that the flames had already extended, prompting calls for additional crews.

Heavy flames could be seen in the rear of all three buildings, as well out multiple windows on the second floor of two of them. Flames then jumped to the attic of a fourth home and crews worked vigorously to halt their spread further.

While the heavy humidity made firefighting conditions even more difficult leading to reported heat related injuries to six firefighters, the Paterson Fire Department, with all hands on deck, beat back the flames within two hours, and prevented any civilian injuries.

48 residents were said to be displaced and receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
