Paper Mill’s 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' Has NYC Press Event
NEW YORK, NY - On Wednesday, Paper Mill Playhouse held a press event for their upcoming show, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" at The New 42nd Street Studios in New York City.
Members of the press had an opportunity speak with the cast and the creative team, and to take photos and videos. They also enjoyed a sampling of the show’s musical numbers including the opening number, which features Laurie Veldheer who plays Millie Dillmount. Veldheer was recently seen in Disney’s "Newsies" on Broadway, reprising the role she created at Paper Mill Playhouse.
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is an effervescent musical romp set in the Roaring Twenties when young Millie Dillmount arrives in New York City. The musical is based on the 1967 film of the same name. The stage show opened on Broadway in April of 2002 and features songs like “Gimme Gimme” and” Not for the Life of Me.” The show received six Tony Awards and five Drama Desk Awards including the win for Best Musical at both award ceremonies.
Mark S. Hoebee, Paper Mill’s Producing Artistic Director is also the director for "Thoroughly Modern Millie." He introduced the cast at the press event saying that he is “very excited” about the production. Hoebee also pointed out how popular the show is with audiences. “Everyone loves this show,” he said.
The show’s choreographer, Denis Jones, agrees. He believes that many people will be interested in seeing the Paper Mill production.
"This show casts a wide net," he said. This is the sixth show that Jones has choreographed for the playhouse. He also choreographed "Damn Yankees," "Smokey Joe’s Café," "The Full Monty," "High School Musical" and "Meet Me in Saint Louis."
The cast is also enthusiastic about “Millie.” Ashley Kate Adams plays Miss Dorothy, Millie Dillmount’s best friend. She is enjoying being a part of the production. “I’m having a really great time,” Adams said. She also pointed out that Paper Mill production originated at the Maltz Jupiter Theater in Jupiter, Florida, and said that the Florida audiences “absolutely loved it.”
Lenora Nemetz, well known for her roles on Broadway in "Cabaret," "Chicago" and "Working," plays Mrs. Meers in the production. “I love playing this role and returning to Paper Mill,” said the veteran actress who appeared in Paper Mill's productions of "Guys and Dolls" and "Showboat" in the 1980s.
Barry Busby is a member of the dance ensemble and also the show’s Dance Captain. He commented about the abundant dance talent in the cast of "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Busby said, “It’s easy with this group. This is when it is fun!”
Area audiences of all ages will delight in the opportunity to see "Thoroughly Modern Millie." The show will open at the Paper Mill Playhouse on April 10 and run through May 5. It will be performed eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday.
