Each and every participant in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program receives the care, attention and motivation to begin life again after recovering from cancer. This free twelve-week, small-group exercise and recovery program designed for adult cancer survivors fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to their normal life or their "new normal". Because the program is conducted outside of medical facilities it emphasizes health, wellness and recovery, not disease.
As one of the LIVESTRONG participants at the Berkeley Heights YMCA spoke about and illustrated her experience and road to wellness…” I am a breast cancer survivor. During one of our group sessions we did an art project where I demonstrated the impact of the free, 12-week program on my life. #1 is my life before cancer – happy, contented. #2 shows how I felt when I was diagnosed - nervous and concern about the outcome. #3 is when I was tentative but wanted to get back into life. #4 is when I found LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA and started exercising for the first time in a small group community with caring Y trainers who understood my weakness. And I was surrounded by a group of survivors who supported my plan for wellness. I am blossoming again. I have found a true partner in my healing!”
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program features: a 12 free Y membership, two 75 minute classes each week, a small group setting (6 to 8 participants), full access to the YMCA facilities including babysitting and childcare services. It is designed for adults who have completed their cancer treatment. YMCA fitness instructors work with each participant to fit the program to their individual needs. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive cancer care. Pre-registration and medical clearance is required for all participants.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA starts on March 6 at the Berkeley Heights YMCA, and meets for 12 weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm. The Berkeley Heights YMCA is located at 550 Springfield Avenue.
