PATERSON, NJ- Hundreds, including the families of those that served, gathered at Paterson Fire Headquarters on Sunday to honor the lives of 29 Paterson firefighters that have lost their lives in the line of duty throughout the Department's storied history.

As the names of each of the men was read out, including that of Firefighter Edward Moore whose 1938 death was only recently discovered to have occurred in the line of duty, a bell tolled, a salute was served, and a flag was placed.

The service was also used to as an opportunity to recognize a number of active firefighters for their service to the community and their acts that "exemplified duty, honor, and courage," including Firefighter Troy Ayers who received the prestigious Mayor's Medal and Captain Rocco Alliotta who was awarded the Chief's Medal by Fire Chief Brian McDermott.

Following the service those gathered assembled in front of Fire Headquarters for the laying of a memorial wreath near the memorial recognizing those that have died protecting Paterson.
