PATERSON, NJ - A city man was in stable condition after being shot in the chest during a dispute Saturday night in the People's Park section of the city.

According to Lt. Patrick Murray, the victim, 24, was shot at around 9:40 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 21st Avenue and Martin Street.

"The victim became involved in a heated verbal argument with another male, and during that exchange, the male produced a handgun, at which time several shots were fired. The victim was struck once in the chest area, and was transported to the hospital by a friend in a private vehicle," Murray said in a statement.

The investigation is continuing, and anyone with information is asked to contact detectives Francisco Brito or Dave Tanis of the Ceasefire Unit at (973) 321-1342.
