PATERSON, NJ – Paterson Police Lt. Patrick Papagni was arrested over the weekend on domestic violence charges, four city officials confirmed.
Authorities have not yet released details of the arrest. Neither the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office nor representatives of Paterson police administration were available for comment on Monday.
City officials said the arrest took place in Paterson. They said Papagni is not being held in custody. It was not clear on Monday night whether city police officials have taken any disciplinary action against Papagni or allowed him to stay on active duty.
Papagni had received one of the largest of the 609 flood relief overtime checks issued by the city in late September. His $5,350 in net overtime pay had placed him ninth in the original rankings and he moved up to sixth after Mayor Jeffrey Jones and two departments were required to return their money.
Papagni works in the police department’s traffic division. He previously had served as chief of staff for Police Chief James Wittig. His 2010 salary was $131,230
