PATERSON, NJ - An 18-year old Paterson man was arrested Wednesday after he was observed carrying a firearm in the area of 21 Amity Street.

According to Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale who said he “personally witnessed the coordinated efforts by these officers,” the incident took place at approximately 2:00 p.m. when Officers A. Carvajal and B. Montesino received a report about the suspect who was observed wearing “distinctive clothing” by Detective Jerry Morvek.

With patrol cars surrounding the area, and after issuing verbal commands to the suspect, later identified as Devean Harris, the man fled on foot making a left turn onto East Main Street.

During the pursuit a gun dropped from Harris’ waistband and was immediately secured by Officer I. Yanes. Harris ran across several blocks before jumping over fence into the driveway of 175 North Main Street where he was apprehended by Montesino.

Harris was arrested and transported to police headquarters while the gun, a Glock 10mm-40, was processed by the crime scene detectives.

“Our police officers just removed a lethal weapon from our streets.,” Mayor Andre Sayegh said following the arrest. “I commend them for their exemplary service”
