PATERSON, NJ - Paterson’s representatives to the New Jersey General Assembly, Shavonda Sumter and Benjie Wimberly, whose district includes Elmwood Park and Garfield in Bergen County, have both called on Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino to resign from his position.

On Thursday, reports surfaced of the existence of audio of Saudino making racist comments. While Saudino admitted to making the comments he initially refused to give up his position before changing course and saying he would step down on Friday.

“When you are one of the top law officers in the state and exhibit such racism, bigotry and hatred, the communities you serve can no longer place their full trust in you to do your job with fairness and unprejudiced,” Sumter said.

Wimberly said that resigning was the only choice as “no apology can take (the comments) back and it will not be ignored or tolerated in our state.”

“Let’s be clear, it’s not alright.”
