PATERSON, NJ - An early-morning fire Friday at School No. 12 in Paterson forced the district to move students to School No. 4/Napier Academy at 55 Clinton St. for the day.
According to Paterson Schools Director of Communications Terry Corallo, the fire broke out sometime before the start of the school day. When Principal Jose Correa arrived at his office in the school at 121 N. Second St. on Friday morning, he smelled smoke and immediately contacted the fire department.
"The fire started prior to school, and there were only a few people in the building when it happened," Corallo told The Alternative Press of Paterson. "The students were all transferred over to School 4 for the school day, and will be transported back to School 12 at the end of the school day to be picked up there."
Unoffcial reports are that the fire broke out somewhere in the lower level of the school. Firefighters and investigators were still on the scene at School No. 12 late Friday morning. There was considerable smoke and water damage reported.
"There will be a restoration company working all weekend, and we don't immediately know yet if the school will be able to open on Monday," Corallo said.
