Paterson Students Win History Project Awards, Now Move on to Statewide Contest

April 15, 2011 at 10:11 PM

PATERSON, NJ - Paterson students recently received awards for more than 20 history projects at The Northern Regional National History Day competition at Seton Hall University on April 2, according to city school officials. The 58 student now will compete in the New Jersey State Competition on May 7 at William Paterson University.

This year’s theme for the contest is Debate and Diplomacy:  Successes, Failures and Consequences. Students, teachers, and administrators from John F. Kennedy High School, PANTHER, PPTA, Eastside High School, PS #7, Rosa Parks High School, and International High School competed in this rigorous academic competition which revolves around various opportunities for project based learning, according to a press release. Students prepared annotated bibliographies, interviewed experts on their topic, and constructed exhibits, websites, documentaries and performances which reflected the depth of their research and demonstrated analytical skills and understanding.

Last school year, Paterson was selected to participate in a study to collect data to measure the impact that National History Day had on student achievement.

“Our students’ research has proven that students who participate in National History Day achieve better grades, perform better on standardized tests, have better attendance, and are better prepared for college,” said State District Superintendent, Dr. Donnie Evans.  “For the past two decades, Paterson has secured its reputation as a district that performs exceptionally well at National History Day competitions. To have 20 projects recognized this year is an outstanding achievement and we look forward to the State competition.”
