SOMERVILLE, NJ – The New Providence boys’ lacrosse team is undefeated no more. After starting the season 7-0, the Pioneers fell just short No. 4 Somerville, 9-8, in triple overtime.
Junior attacker Jack Hardy connected with senior Jon Ebert with five seconds to play in regulation to get the game to overtime.
In the extra session, after back-and-forth play, Somerville’s Logan Leblond scored unassisted to keep his team a perfect 6-0.
New Providence led, 4-3, at halftime, as Harvey and Ebert tag-teamed a goal in the opening half’s final six seconds. Somerville responded after the break scoring three unanswered to take a 6-4 lead.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to one going into the fourth quarter before sophomore Quinn Killeen tied the game with 10:43 to play.
Somerville answered right back to retake the lead before NP senior James Burke knotted things up again with 2:45 left. Leblond gave Somerville the lead back in the final 30 seconds, but New Providence answered the call with Eberts’ late goal.
Leblond led all scorers with four goals, including the triple-overtime clincher. He added four assists to account for eight points.
Harvey took control for New Providence, scoring three goals and assisting in two more. He leads all Pioneers with 28 tallies.
New Providence is back in action on April 22 when the Pioneers take on Scotch Plains-Fanwood at Lieder Field. Face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
