SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - Union Catholic scored two runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to take a 4-1 baseball victory from New Providence on opening day Tuesday afternoon at Union Catholic.
New Providence scored a run in the top of the first inning when Jordan Morang delivered an RBI single to score Mark Giacalone, who had led off the game with a walk. But after that, Union Catholic pitcher Ryan Kahn settled in, pitching six strong innings, the last five of them shutout innings.
Bryan Sherman went 2-for-3 for New Providence. Losing pitcher Dave Gelormini allowed six hits and three earned runs in 5 1/3 solid innings pitched for the Pioneers. Sherman did not allow a walk and struck out two.
