PISCATAWAY, NJ — On Sunday, May 17, the community is invited to be part of a drive-by car parade to wish Danny Roman a ‘Happy 16th Birthday’.
The parade will start at 1:00 p.m. at the Holmes Marshall Fire House, 5300 Deborah Drive in Piscataway.
According to his family, Danny, who was born with a rare genetic disorder, Gluteric Acidemia has been wheelchair bound most of his life and eats and drinks through a feeding tube. He uses a special communication device since he is unable to speak and depends on his family to help him shower and get dressed.
“Danny was not expected to make it past 1, and he did, not expected to make it past 6, and he did, and here we are at age 16,” said Krystal Morales Colon who is organizing the parade.
“In any other circumstance we would have been throwing Danny a big party but unfortunately we cannot,” she said in reference to the current pandemic.
Danny’s family is also using the parade to help promote their GoFundMe campaign, “Getting Danny a Ride”.
They hope to purchase a wheelchair accessible van that is needed to help get him to doctors’ appointments. So far, they have raised almost $4,000 towards the cost of the van.
Colon has coordinated with the Holmes Marshall Fire Company to lead off Danny’s birthday drive-by parade.
“On Sunday we are expecting two fire trucks and many vehicles to pass by and yell ‘Happy Birthday to Danny’,” said Colon.
To join the parade in your vehicle to wish Danny Roman a ‘Happy Birthday’, organizers will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at the fire house located at 5300 Deborah Drive in Piscataway. The procession past Danny’s home will be at 1 p.m.
Be ready to honk your horns in celebration.
