PLAINFIELD, NJ — The Plainfield Public Schools district will observe Veterans Day on Monday, hosting events at Plainfield High School and Cook Elementary School to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

The ceremony at Plainfield High School, at 950 Park Ave., will start at 11:00 a.m.  The names of 121 past Plainfield High School students who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean Vietnam wars will be read.  These names are immortalized on bronze plaques posted on the walls of Plainfield High School near the gymnasium.

The plaques were reportedly rescued by a former history teacher when the old school building was torn down to make room for the new high school. According to Nancy Piwowar, President of the Historical Society of Plainfield at the Drake House Museum, Tiffany Corbett, a high school history teacher, saved them and had them reinstalled in the new high school.

Monday's ceremony will also include the presentation of the colors by Plainfield High School's AFROTC, a Taps bugle call presented by the school band, and a bagpiper who will perform the themes from each branch of the armed forces. Flags will be flown, and red ribbons will decorate the front garden where the ceremony will be held.

The Veterans Day commemoration is organized by PHS History Department teachers Beverly Lyons, Brenda Nobel and Emma Sinnott.

The ceremony is expected to the held in the front garden of the school, weather permitting, and will be moved indoors to the auditorium in the event of inclement weather.

Plainfield’s Cook Elementary School, located at 739 Leland Ave., will also celebrate veterans who are relatives of the school's students with a breakfast and an assembly. Veterans will be presented with certificates.
